Rules of life in Photoshop: to edit ANYTHING the layer it is on MUST be selected. Ctrl+Click to select a mask by clicking on the box. (Cmnd+Click for Mac)

I'm just a noob...is the layer you want to edit selected? Are you clicking the box for the mask?
